Vinay Desai, santoor & Shawn Mativetsky, tabla

HAMMERED: International Festival of Hammered Dulcimers @ the Aga Khan Museum, 77 Wynford Dr, Toronto, ON

This electrifying evening brings together the hammered-string traditions of Europe and South Asia in a program unfolding in two immersive sets. First the Indian santoor, then the European cimbalom, echoing in conversation.

Rooted in the Hindustani classical tradition, the santoor holds a central place in the musical heritage of Kashmir and North India. Vinay Desai brings its luminous voice to life through the unfolding architecture of a classical raag.

Beginning with a meditative, free-flowing improvisation, the performance gradually builds into intricate rhythmic interplay with renowned tabla player Shawn Mativetsky — culminating in a vibrant, fast-paced finale that showcases the depth and dynamism of the tradition.

Feel the energy of a live cimbalom ensemble led by Alexandru Sura, where dazzling technique meets deep emotion. Joined by violin, kobza, and double bass, the group moves effortlessly from rapid-fire dances to haunting, lyrical melodies.

The cimbalom’s luminous, percussive sound has travelled across centuries — from its early Middle Eastern origins to the grand concert halls of Central Europe. Today, its vibrant voice continues to captivate in both traditional and contemporary music.
